| The project aims to build a network on research and assesment linked to the situation of unaccompanied young people and their establishment in the Swedish labor market.
The historically high number of asylum seekers during 2015-2016 has led to large and rapid changes in the legal and social situation of unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
The discourse about the "refugee crisis" is to some extent now silenced, and the project will investigate the changing landscape "after the crisis".
Many unaccompanied young people now face a situation in which they have a time-limited right to stay in Sweden, but do not have the right to compensation for studies or to work. This has meant that unaccompanied young people are increasingly being used by the informal labor market and by criminal networks.
The gray zone between citizenship, work permits and the right to education that many unaccompanied young people experience today is to a large extent still unexplored.
The purpose is to gather a group of actors on issues that affect unaccompanied migrants' opportunities for inclusion in Swedish society and working life.
The network consists of both nationally and internationally active researchers, as well as professionals and volunteers in the field - including representatives from the unaccompanied young people themselves - and aims to create a unique dialogue between research, politics and practice.
The network will focus on the following themes:
Unaccompanied youth’s establishment and conditions in the labor market, with a focus on both the formal and informal labor market.
The role of educational and social institutions in the youth’s transition from school to work (and adulthood).
The legal context, and its implications for unaccompanied minors’ and youths’ life conditions in Sweden.
Unaccompanied youths’ perspectives of their own situation (past, present, future), with particular focus on education and work |
